1. FEMA Tornado Shelter Project.

    285 Colorado Street

    Avery, Texas

    Construction began Monday, April 5, 2004. Project finish date July 1, 2004.

    Dedication and grand opening August 27, 2004. (completed)

 

2. Water line replacement on Austin street to the water tower.

    (completed)

 

3. DOWNTOWN landscape program 2004.

    Benches finished and the trees were planted on Thursday, April 29, 2004.

4. HOME GRANT PROGRAM AWARD: $330,000

    Six applicants awarded homes July 13, 2004

     Demolition is complete as of 10-17-2004. New construction began

     November 10, 2004 completion expected March 5, 2005.

5.  Acquisition of the Rail property through the Avery City Limits

    should be complete by end of April 2006. (Paperwork received on July 1, 2006 for

    transfer of property to the city of Avery and should be finalized by September 15, 2006.) CITY now has ownership of the rail property from the Bowie County line east of Avery to CTY RD 4310 West of Avery, a six mile strip with a superior title from the department of transportation & the Rail Road. (Completed April 2007)

 

6.  The Last remaining Tomato Shed is now owned by the City of Avery. 2007

 

Current Projects:

 

1.      TO BEAT THE LANDFILL!

      Fighting the proposed Landfill for Red River County started in June 2004 (which we found out about on July 21, 2005.). JULY 13, 2006 Waiting    for court date to be set in Austin, Texas. Oct. 2007, Austin Court ruled in Kelsoe’s favor. Nov. 2007, waiting for signature of the judge on the judgement to decide whether to appeal.

 

 2. Interviewing prospective grocery store owners wanting to move into the city (On GOING)

    

 3. To have the Tomato Shed registered with the Texas Historical Commission (The Avery

     Historical Society, Inc. transferred ownership of the Tomato Shed to the City of Avery

     on June 23, 2006.) Paper work on the commission plaque is in progress.

 

 4. To open a History Center for Avery (First History Exhibit was shown at the 2006 Tomato Festival,

     July 1, 2006. We are looking for a permanent building)

 

7. The City has applied for 5 more Homes from the HOME GRANT PROGRAM and received word that

    it will be February 2007 when the amount is awarded. July 9, 2007 the city received a $300,000 HOME GRANT for 5 new homes.

    November 2007, applications are currently being processed for residents.

 

 8. July 9, 2007 the city received a $250,000 STEP GRANT to replace the water plant pumps and old water

      lines in the city. November 2007, Hayter Engineering is working on the specs. Contracts have already been signed.
